The 78 RPM Period (1939 to at least 1953):

1. January 1939 – Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis (Four hands? Two Pianos?) “Two’s and Fews” Originally on a Blue Note 12 inch 78, reissued on the Blue Note 12 inch LP “Boogie Woogie Classics BLP 1209.

2. June 1939 - Sidney Bechet (Soprano Saxophone), Summertime (Gershwin). Originally on a Blue Note 78, reissued on a 12 inch LP as Sidney Bechet Volume 1 BLP1201 (or 81201 in fake stereo!). Sidney Bechet, Soprano Sax; Meade “Lux” Lewis, Piano; Teddy Bunn, Guitar; John Williams, Bass; Sidney Catlett, Drums.

3. 1943 – George Lewis (Clarinet) When You Wore a TulipOriginally on a Blue Note 78, reissued on a 12 inch LP George Lewis and his New Orleans Stompers Volume 1 BLP 1205 (or 81205 in fake stereo!) George Lewis, Clarinet; Avery “Kid” Howard, Trumpet; Jim Robinson, Trombone; George Guesnon, Banjo; Alcide “Slow Drag” Pavageau, Bass; Joe Watkins Drums.

4. July 1948 – Thelonious Monk (Piano), Misterioso(Monk). Reissued on 10 inch LP and then on the 12 inch LP “The Genius of Modern Music - Volume 1” BST 81510.  Milt Jackson, Vibes; Thelonious Monk, Piano; John Simmons, Bass; Shadow Wilson, Drums. It is not included on the CD reissues of the LP. The LP has a stereo number but is mono!

5. May 1951 - Bud Powell (Piano), Un Poco Loco(Powell). Reissued on the 12 inch LP “The Amazing Bud Powell - Volume 1” BLP 1503. Bud Powell, Piano; Curly Russell, Bass; Max Roach, Drums.

The Classic LP Era (1957 to 1967):

6. September 1957 - John Coltrane (Tenor Saxophone), BlueTrain (Coltrane). From the stereo LP “Blue Train” BLP 1577. Lee Morgan, Trumpet; Curtis Fuller, Trombone; John Coltrane, Tenor Saxophone; Kenny Drew, Piano; Paul Chambers, Bass; “Philly” Joe Jones, Drums. The new 75 anniversary LP is stereo despite the mono number.

7. March 1958 - Sonny Clark (Piano), Cool Struttin (Sonny Clark). From the stereo LP “Cool Struttin” BLJ 81588. Art Farmer, Trumpet; Jackie McLean, Alto Saxophone; Sonny Clark, Piano; Paul Chambers, Bass; “Philly” Joe Jones, Drums. The new 75th anniversary LP is mono.

8. March 1958 - Cannonball Adderley (Alto Saxophone) AutumnLeaves (Mercer-Prevert-Kosma). From the stereo LP Somethin’ Else” BLP 1595. Miles Davis, Trumpet; “Cannonball” Adderley, Alto Saxophone; Hank Jones, Piano; Sam Jones, Bass; Art Blakey, Drums. The new 75th anniversary LP is mono.

9. 1961 - Freddie Hubbard (Trumpet), I Wish I Knew (Billy Smith). From the stereo LP “Goin’ Up” ST 84056. Freddie Hubbard, Trumpet; Hank Mobley, Tenor Saxophone; McCoy Tyner, Piano; Paul Chambers, Bass; “Philly” Joe Jones, Drums.

10. May 1962 - Herbie Handcock (Keyboards), WatermelonMan (Handcock). From his first record under his own name, “Takin’ Off” BST 84109. Freddie Hubbard, Trumpet; Dexter Gordon, Tenor Saxophone; Herbie Handcock, Piano; Butch Warren, Bass; Billy Higgins, Drums.

11. October 1962 - Sheila Jordan (Voice), Baltimore Oriole (Carmichael-Webster) and Willow Weep for Me (Ronell) from the LP “Portrait of Sheila” BLP 9002. Accompanied by Barry Galbraith, Guitar; Steve Swallow, Bass; Denzil Best, Drums.

12. June 1963 - Joe Henderson (Tenor Saxophone), BlueBossa (Kenny Dorham). From his first record in his own name “Page One” BST 84140. Kenny Dorham, Trumpet; Joe Henderson, Tenor Saxophone; McCoy Tyner, Piano; Butch Warren, Bass; Pete La Roca, Drums.

13. May 1965 - Dexter Gordon (Tenor Saxophone), I’m a Fool to Want You From the LP “Clubhouse” GXF  3055 (LT -989).  Dexter Gordon, Tenor Saxophone; Freddie Hubbard,Ttrumpet; Barry Harris, Piano; Bob Cranshaw, Bass; Billy Higgins, Drums. Also note his starring role in the film “Round Midnight” (some would say the best jazz film ever made). The official soundtrack is on Columbia/Sony (CBS 70300) but many people think that the out-takes issued on Blue Note are even better (Blue Note LP BT 85135).

14, June 1966 – Donald Byrd (Trumpet) Mustang From the LP “Mustang” BLP 4238 (stereo despite the mono number). Donald Byrd, Trumpet; Sonny Red, Alto Sax; Hank Mobley, Tenor Sax; McCoy Tyner, Piano; Walter Booker, Bass; Freddie Waits, Drums.
